The problem with books. Solved.
/When I sat down to write Trusting Technology, I was excited at the prospect of writing another book. But I was also concerned about one major limitation of the medium.
Many months later, I think I’ve come up with the solution.
Books are the first technology that allowed humankind to broadcast information. In so doing, books carried stories and knowledge across the barriers of time and distance.
And though we can now publish books in digital form, many readers still prefer the physical book—a tactile object that offers the wonder of secrets within. Paper books are also static objects. Once they are printed and delivered, they can’t be updated.
That’s the limitation that concerned me—a book about technology could get out of date pretty quickly. While I’ve written mostly about concepts that are not apt to change before I can publish a second edition, some topics will change by the month. And I anticipate wanting to publish responses to feedback I get as soon as the book hit the shelves.
So I’m walking the walk by offering information in other, complementary media. Specifically, the Trusting Technology companion website—referred to throughout the book as the booksite—is a place that readers can go for more information that will always be up to date, responsive, and additive to the printed word.
Please take a few minutes to refer to the Trusting Technology companion website where
you’ll find tools, videos, and other useful material. Long after this book has gone to press, the site will remain topical. The booksite is here www.trustingtechnologybook.com.
