Be aware

I've enjoyed the benefits of meditation for some time. When a friend asked me to sum it up in one word, I chose "Awareness".

It turns out that awareness of the everyday experiences we take for granted is also a great trigger for innovation in your business.

Today, for example, I woke to an alarm that interprets my sleep patterns from the sound of my breath. It wakes when I'm in the light phase of the sleep cycle. Feels great when you get the timing right.

Then I drove to a new destination using my GPS—we all have them. How would it be, I thought, if I could build a GPS for my clients to help them navigate tough decisions.

Yesterday, I'm happy to report that I had an outstanding call centre experience. My agent was able to address three diverse enquiries without handing me off to someone else. He'd been equiped with all the necessary information and empowered to address all my concerns. What lesson do you draw from that?

It turns out that innovation opportunities present themselves to our consumer-selves every day. The key is to be aware of them, and apply them to your own business.

DON'T MISS A THING

This week's challenge takes a full day, so try this tomorrow.

Make a note of every good experience you have, whether or not it's new. Do this through the day (except when driving) so you don't overlook anything. Then reflect on your list in the evening. Can you draw 1, 2 or 3 ideas worth piloting in your business?

Have you simply moved the problem?
